In Memory: Barefoot Sanders

U.S. District Judge Harold BarefootSanders Jr. died Sunday at 83. He had been a Democratic State Representative, U.S.Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, legislative counsel to President LyndonJohnson, and a federal Judge from 1979 until retirement in 2006. He was also the Democratic candidate for a U.S. House seat in 1958 and for U.S. Senator in 1972, but lost both races.

You can read more about his fascinating life and the many good things he helped do for his community and country in his obit at the Dallas News, which also has a separate chronology with little-known items like his being named State Fair Freckle Champion at 11.

There will be funeral services this Wednesday, September 24, at 4 PM at Northaven United Methodist Church, 11211 Preston Road (between Royal & Forest Lanes), Dallas, Texas 75230. He is survived by his wife Jan (a longtime Democratic Precinct Chair and peace activist), four children (one of whom is now a Massachusetts Superior Court judge herself), and ten grandchildren.
